5 questions with Kirsty Patrick

With Tent London kicking off tomorrow, we chat to British lighting and homeware designer Kirsty Patrick about her inspiration, favourite designs and the Etsy Four Corners of Craft exhibition.

How did you become a lighting designer?

My love of lighting started when I began playing with shapes and shadows on my art foundation course at Banbury College. When I went to Carmarthen School of the Art for my degree 3D Art in the Landscape, I kept either making or going back to light in some form and I have never looked back since.

What inspires your collection?

It’s hard to pin my inspiration down to one single source.  Barbara Hepworth’s sculptural forms, Naum Gabo’s light catching and kinetic objects all played major roles in helping me create the ‘Sphery’ range.  The home and the space we occupy is always a continuous spark of inspiration for my designs. Also I have a huge soft spot for the beautiful Scandinavian styling – you can never go wrong with natural woody tones paired with white and grey.

What’s your favourite design and why?

A design favourite of mine has to be the Eames Rocking chair in white. Simplicity and function, in one statement product, that never dates. A wooden rocker with geometric linear legs and a beautifully comfortable white seat, I would happily relax for hours in this classic!

What will you be up to during London Design Festival?

I am taking part in Etsy’s Four Corners of Craft exhibition, in partnership with Crafts Council and Tent London. 45 designers and makers have been chosen by Etsy to showcase the best high-end craft from England, Wales, Ireland and Scotland. I cannot wait to represent Wales.

What do you have planned for the future?

Things are pretty busy at the moment! I have just celebrated the first year of my shop byKirsty in Cardiff – selling homeware, lighting and gifts from 55 top UK independent designers and makers. (I will also be visiting LDF with my other hat on looking for new designers for the shop).  I am itching to get making myself, so watch this space for new designs!
