Asda trials wonky fruit and veg
Asda has announced collaboration with Jamie Oliver that aims to encourage consumers to buy misshapen fruit and veg and better understand the issues of food waste. The initiative arose out of the Channel 4 series, Jamie and Jimmy’s Friday Night Feast, which recently looked at the way that some food is wasted purely for aesthetic reasons.
A trial started in Asda on 26 January which will offer a range of ‘Beautiful on the Inside’ packaged produce, which will be sold at lower than standard prices. It is believed that this could facilitate the retail sale of up to 20% more of a standard citrus crop, 15% more swede and 10% more potatoes.
Although many oddly-shaped crops are used for food processing, it is estimated that some 90,000 tonnes of ‘sub standard’ produce is still sent to landfill in the UK every year.
Red Nose Day hits the shelves
Weetabix has launched a special edition of Weetabix Strawberry – plus an on pack-promotion on its Weetos, Ready Brek and Crispy Minis brands. A kids-focused promotion will donate 5p to Comic Relief from every pack sold. The launch will also be backed with a marketing campaign which kicks off next month.
Unilever’s leading PG tips and Persil brands are targeting £1M for Comic Relief, with limited editions that will donate 8p from every promotional pack produced before March 2015. Supported by two above the line campaigns, the packs feature an eye-catching red ‘Stain Eraser Ball’ on Persil Small and Mighty, whilst PG Tips’ iconic monkey will be sporting the traditional Comic Relief red nose.
Meanwhile, Maltesers is encouraging everyone to ‘Bake Yourselves Silly’ through its new Comic Relief promotion, also targeted to raise £1M. The theme encourages consumers to hold fundraising bake-sales, linked to data that suggests that the top ten web searches for Maltesers are ‘baking related.’ The Maltesers on-pack partnership with Comic Relief has raised £2.5M since it started back in 2011.
Still on the baking theme, the BBC has lined up 16 celebrities for a four week run of ‘Comic Relief Bake Off’ in the run up to Red Nose Day on 13 March.
Free in-store health checks at Tesco as part of new three-year charity deal
This month (January 2015) up to 40,000 Tesco shoppers will be offered free health-checks in store, as the retailer launches a brand new three-year charity partnership with the British Heart Foundation and Diabetes UK.
A YouGov survey of just over 2,000 people was commissioned to mark the launch of the new partnership. The research suggested that almost two-thirds of people are unaware of the number of calories they should consume to maintain a healthy weight.
Tesco in-store pharmacies will offer free 20 minute health checks including a blood-pressure check, cholesterol test, Type 2 diabetes test and a BMI (weight) check.
The three organisations will work together on a series of initiatives aimed at helping people better understand how to lead a healthy lifestyle. The partnership also aims to raise £30M over the course of the next three years.

Sainsbury’s has announced that 95% of the palm oil in its own brand products now comes from sources certified by the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO). This includes a portfolio of nearly 400 products – from steak pie to hand soap – made using palm oil certified to the strictest sustainability standard, from ‘fully segregated’ sources.
The RSPO has three forms of certification for palm oil sustainability: fully segregated, mass balance and ‘book and claim.’ Segregated means that each batch can be traced back to the farm source; mass balance is where certified sustainable palm oil is mixed with conventional but the volume of sustainable oil is administratively monitored so it can be claimed and labelled as such on products. ‘Book and claim’ means that certified palm oil is not kept apart, but instead producers can earn certificates which they sell to manufactures and retailers so that claimed volumes of sustainable can be matched.
The retailer has also launched what it claims to be the UK’s very first own-brand washing up liquid made with the fully-certified sustainable ingredient.
The 95% target falls short of Sainsbury’s aim in its ’20 by 20’ sustainability manifesto, which was to achieve 100% certified sustainable palm oil (either mass balance or segregation) by the end of 2014.
Finnair: first European airline to win IATA enviro status
Finnair was this month certified by IATA as a ‘Stage 2’ operator in its Environmental Assessment (IEnvA) programme. Finnair is the first European operator to achieve this status, second only in the world after South African Airways.
The IATA Environmental Assessment (IEnvA) program is an aviation-specific environmental program designed to improve the environmental management and performance of an airline through independent evaluation.
Finnair, which was named as Best European Airline by the TTG Travel Awards in October for the second year running, has an ambitious environmental programme. This includes a targeted 20% cut in CO2 emissions by 2017 and a 40% reduction in noise pollution. Finnair’s continuing work to mitigate the business risks of climate change also resulted in it being awarded a place on the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP)’s A List Climate Performance Leadership Index 2014.
York University researchers seek ways to turn food waste into cash
Researchers at York University’s Green Chemistry Centre of Excellence are collaborating with food manufacturers in the Yorkshire and Humberside region to identify new ways of deriving useful materials and financial return from food waste.
The Green Chemistry Centre of Excellence is a world-leading centre for research into green and sustainable chemistry and related technologies which can be incorporated into manufacturing processes and new products.
The Centre’s WasteValor project uses desk-based and laboratory research methods to help food manufacturers recover income from food waste. It also connects with potential users of extracted materials in a whole range of other industries.
For instance, useful chemicals such as limonene and pectin can be recovered from fruit peels and starch from potato peelings. Another project is looking at new uses for the oils from coffee grounds – which can be used as a natural and ethical alternative to palm oil in some types of soap and cosmetic formulations.
