Our top picks at Milan’s Salone Internazionale del Mobile
Yesterday marked the first day of Milan’s furniture fair, Salone Internazionale del Mobile. Showcasing innovations in interiors from both big names and emerging talent, more than 300,000 visitors from 160 countries and 2,100 exhibitors are expected at this year’s event.
We’ve selected our top not-to-be missed picks from the exhibition, from fitness inspired furniture to organic seating.
- Nike: “The Nature of Motion”
Nike makes shoes, sports clothes, and fitness bands, so why not furniture? The company is celebrating this year’s show with a full itinerary of events, talks, and product presentations involving contemporary designers who’ve produced work, both conceptual and practical, revolving around the human body’s potential and the miracle of motion.
- Ambra Medda With Airbnb: “Makers and Bakers”
Together with Airbnb, cool curator Ambra Medda is taking over Ristorante Marta, an intimate space near Milan’s city center, to showcase the work of 24 designers, illustrators, and makers hailing from 14 countries, all of whom have produced objects related to the communal meal. Stop by for a snack and a glass of wine. The idea behind the happening? Breaking bread with friends and strangers feeds not just your stomach, but also your soul.
- Lee Broom: “Salone del Automobile”
This year British designer Lee Broom will be presenting a new lighting collection, Optical, in a roving delivery van named “Salone del Automobile”. The van will pitch up at design hotspots across the city, including Brera Design District, Zona Torona and Spazio Rossana Orlandi. Visitors are invited to step into the back of the van to see a recreation of an Italian palazzo featuring a new range of monochrome floor and pendant lights.
Visit the Italian furniture company’s stand to see its Organic chair, an injection-moulded seat made of plant waste by Italian designer Antonio Citterio. The material is similar in its finished form to plastic but is biodegradable!
Salone del Mobile takes place from the 12th -17th April.
