Rodda’s celebrate the inaugural National Cream Tea Day by Megan Hocking

Megan Hocking reports on a brand new fixture of the season which made its debut shortly after Royal Ascot and just before Wimbledon.  Friday 26th June marked the first ever National Cream Tea Day. The organisers – Cream Tea Society partners Rodda’s and Tiptree – wanted as many people around the country as possible to celebrate this quintessentially British tea occasion, whilst encouraging  fundraising for Marie Curie Cancer Care through the treasured tradition too.

On the day Yorkshire Building Society, a Marie Curie corporate partner, broke the World Record for the largest cream tea party in multiple venues with 667 colleagues taking part around the country.

Fronted by The Great British Bake Off’s Frances Quinn, #NationalCreamTeaDay was trending on Twitter for the entire day and had a reach of almost 10 million with some of the UK’s biggest brands joining in on the conversation. Tesco, Tetley, Twinings, Visit England, The National Trust, jamieoliver.com and even Downton Abbey took part in some way in the inaugural event, with many debating whether jam or cream should go on top. Universal Pictures even tweeted an image of the Minions enjoying their Cream Tea.

We helped spread the word far and wide in the likes of The Sun on Sunday, Metro and Crumbs Magazine. We made sure our friends at BBC Radio Cornwall, Western Morning News and West Briton received a delicious drop of scrumptious warm scones, jam and Rodda’s cream to join in with the national tea party.
