Royal Cornwall Show
The Royal Cornwall Show is a key calendar event for Cornwall at the beginning of every June. This year marked its 25th anniversary and Wild Card was delighted to be part of the activity planned by Rodda’s , celebrating a landmark occasion – 125 years of clotted cream production, since great-great-grandmother Eliza Jane started baking clotted cream in a farm house kitchen.
Rodda’s was one of the very first food producers to support the Show 25 years ago. As a fifth generation business, the tradition of passing down stories from one generation to the next lies at the heart of the company. And so, to celebrate the 125th anniversary in style, Rodda’s created a new children’s book, The Great Cream Robbery, available to the public for the very first time at the Show.
The book tells the adventurous tale of Merryn, the cleverest cat criminal in Cornwall. The beautiful language and illustrations throughout the book bring to life the joys of eating cream teas with those you love – and what better way to bring the book to life than to have a bright blue mascot-sized Merryn running loose around the showground! Families were encouraged to share their images of Merryn to help #catchthecat and Merryn was even spotted by a ‘policewoman’ crossing the showground in-between main acts!
In the Rodda’s hospitality tent, book readings were held with school children read by BBC Radio Cornwall’s Daphne Skinnard, and the fantastic Tea Vintage ladies created a Rodda’s sing song for the children too. Beautiful cream teas were served throughout the day to a vintage tea party backdrop.
Various media interviews with MD Nicholas Rodda were held across the day broadcast on BBC Radio Cornwall and Merryn even took part in a ‘mascot dance off’ for Pirate FM! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SXXGopWlZNo
