A TRIP TO MEATOPIA

Saturday saw foodies in their hundreds descending on East London’s Tobacco Dock to celebrate the UK’s first Meatopia.

Exported from New York, Meatopia aimed to celebrate all things meaty, from burgers to pig’s head sausage; there was something for everyone.

Food came from all over Britain and the world. London was represented by favourites including Duck & Waffle with BBQ Pigs Head, Moro serving Quail with Cumin & Paprika, Fergus Henderson with Ox Heart Bun, Koya with Hay Seared Venison Sashimi and Shake Shack (recently adopted by Londoners) dishing up Crisp-Grilled Confit of Hog Belly. Manchester’s Almost Famous represented the North with its Run BMC Burger, a mixture of a chuck, marrow and brisket patty with BBQ salt n pepper pretzel beef rib, pork crackling, crumbled beef monster munch, peppercorn mustard cream mayo and a tangy beef and BBQ dip.

Not to hand over its meat fanatic title easily, America’s offering included Franklin Barbecue with Slow Cooked Texas Style Brisket and The Hot and Hot Fish Club from Alabama with Smoked Chicken, Crimson Grits and Stone Fruit.

Tickets to the event gave you Meat Bucks, which could be exchanged for the intriguing dishes including tasty desserts, some of which were provided by The Marshmallowists. Flavours were creative with the blackcurrant and mint being the perfect end to the meaty day.
